The National School of Judges, Greece, is organizing, supported by the European Union Programme Hercule III (2014-2020), an action entitled “Fraud against the EU by illegal subsidies in agricultural products and tobacco smuggling”. The aim of the training is to update judges and prosecutors further on the general problem of unlawful acts against the interests of the Union, in particular in connection with agricultural subsidies and the smuggling of tobacco products. A round table (8 July 2016) and a conference (3-4 November 2016) for 33 legal practitioners (judiciary, magistrates, and prosecutors) representing nine Member States and three candidate countries. The objectives of the action are to: a) raise awareness among the judiciary and other branches of the legal profession of the protection of the financial interests of the Union; b) improve cooperation between the judiciary, academics and national and international bodies in charge of protecting the EU’s financial interests; exchange information with colleagues from other Member States, in order to identify best practice; c) cooperate with non-judicial bodies in charge of protecting the EU’s financial interests, e.g. customs, police, representatives of industry; d) establish an observatory to facilitate the exchange of information, experiences and best practice; apply a framework of best practices and organize an international observatory; and e) enhance legal and judicial protection of the EU’s financial interests against fraud by promoting comparative law analysis.
